Last night, I heard Rob Bell live for the first time. I will admit that I was a little apprehensive as I did not know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised.
A church friend, Karen, joined me at “The Prospect” – a restaurant across the street before the event. We shared our VERY conservative church histories. It was a welcomed fun conversation. Growing up, my family was Holiness/Pentecostal/Deliverance. (HOLINESS! It yet stands. *quickening* … For my deep folks. LOL!!!!)
As we were talking, a group of guys sat next to us. They looked liked Midwest Bible thumpers. They were really church leaders in conservative churches who were undercover liberal. They were so much fun. I ask them “does your church know where you are?” We had a huge laugh, but it was great to hear their hearts about their journeys. One guy even shared his story of love and acceptance for his son who came out of the closet at 15. (His son is now grown with a partner that comes to the conservative family functions.)
After a quick bite, we were treated to one of the most humorous… Sermon. It was not a talk. It was not the standard 3 points and a hoop. It was a well thought out walk through the mystery of the holy. I don’t want to spoil the talk for anyone who is looking to go.
Even if you are conservative, you will definitely enjoy the treatment of “the holy.” Until the next trip…. Qdosh, Qdosh, Qdosh. (Rob, did I spell that correctly?)
